Augusta Hathaway was born in New York City on March 6, 1878. Her father, Charles DeJuan Hathaway, was an American sculptor of the Italian Renaissance period. Her mother, Kate Gandy, was a society figure and socialite of New York's high society. She attended Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut
Augusta graduated from Vassar College in 1899 and married her childhood sweetheart, Charles John Hathaway (a descendant of John Hathaway), on June 25, 1902. She traveled throughout Europe with her husband before settling in New Orleans where she became a prominent socialite. She was a leader in the movement that sought to gain equal rights for women and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Confederacy.
